Finding a licensed day home in Alberta
How day homes work
A day home cares for up to 6 children in the caregiver’s own home, not counting their own.
A licensed day home works under a day home agency. Alberta licenses the agency.
The agency approves each home, trains its caregivers, and visits each home at least 6 times a year.
Alberta also inspects at least 1 in 10 of each agency’s homes every year.
What it costs
At a licensed home that takes Alberta’s funding, full time is $326.25 a month and part time is $230.
It’s for children up to kindergarten age. Ask the agency whether its homes take the funding.
Unlicensed care doesn’t qualify for Alberta’s funding.
Day home or daycare?
A day home is care in the caregiver’s own home, in a small group.
A daycare is a licensed centre, with children in larger groups by age.
Both can take Alberta’s funding, so the monthly fee can be the same.
Check an agency’s record
Alberta’s Childcare Search shows each agency’s recent inspections and 18 months of non-compliance. Alberta’s Childcare Search ↗
Find a spot
Type your postal code or city, then call an agency on its page.
When you call, ask:
- Do you have a spot for a child this age near me?
- Do your homes take Alberta’s funding?
- Which days and hours can the home take?
- Can I visit the home first?
